COVID AND MILA
I am sorry for the long lapse between posts. Like everything during COVID, even time is different. God in His sovereignty, has a plan for this season. He is working. (Great sermon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGsDCAtd0PQ) While we can try we will never know what the purposes are but I believe there to be a million reasons for this and if quality of time is one of them I hope families every where are hugging there loved ones tighter, having deeper conversations and exploring a faith that will sustain when we return to normal. I will say that the time with Mila, with all our kids, has been sweet. It is funny that when quarantine started it was cold. That first "official" day I was in a sweatshirt, playing around the world (basketball game) in the rain. Lego challenges with family in Kentucky was daily. Food rationing felt like it was going to be a thing and no one knew what social distancing meant. Now, a whole new host of routines litter our daily lives. Our kids even question proximity to others and have learned to wipe down a package from Amazon. We, The Smith's, have done as good a job of quarantine as we can since March 8th. Not because we fear the virus, nor because we want to do our part of "flattening the curve" (which doesn't even seem to be a thing now). Yes we believe we have a responsibility but our concern since "Coronoavirus" was first uttered was Mila.
COVID infects the lungs and kills through the heart. So does Myhre Syndrome. COVID causes fibrosis to those infected, so does Myhre Syndrome. COVID is most dangerous to those who are obese, who have under lying health issues, so does Myhre Syndrome. So to everyone who questions why we have quarantined for so long, why we aren't ready to travel, why I have been slower to return to the office, it is because of Myhre Syndrome. Michelle and I want to rely on faith, not to be afraid of the world. To let people in, to hug, to visit with others, and we have while trying to know the other individuals interactions, but this is all very difficulty, because of Myhre Syndrome.
Thankfully, I am able to sit on the Advisory Board with some brilliant clinical, research and science professionals, and while they are on the front line's with COVID 19, they still do not know what this means for our Myhre warriors. We first heard children weren't affected, bringing a relief, now we hear things like "multisystem inflammatory disease" showing up in children. Recommendations have quickly changed and now suggest we do not leave the house without Mila wearing a mask. This is hard and it sucks. We get looks from people, who know our story, when we are having a conversation, to close to a friend or neighbor. We also feel judged by others when we do not want to take our first step to normal. For me, I am a father to Mila and she is my priority in this. Everything else will be weighed and measured before done. She is, without a doubt, the happiest thing during COVID, so no utterance of disapproval will change that.
Mila is healthy! Praise the Lord. No sniffles, no shortness's of breath and thankfully no underlying conditions that make us think she has the virus. Others in the Myhre community are still having more severe issues causing visits to hospitals, which everyone wants to avoid. Mila is sleeping great, others are not. Mila is talking up a storm and keeping pace with her siblings. While our other kids have struggled (like all kids) with contentment, feeling cooped up, over anxious and even angry, Mila has seemed to become more independent. Maybe it is being at home, maybe it because we have had the close attention from only our core unit but nonetheless, our precious angel is thriving, today, during this season. So with God and His infinite purposes for each of us in this crisis, one amazing blessing is her health and her character, which makes us feel so blessed but also overly concerned for what all this may mean for her health.
COVID in general, we struggle with feelings of this being a seasonal Flu, a political plot or worse. All of us are trying to discern the truth, A heard recently that "the truth lies somewhere between the banks of 2 extremes.: I believe this to be so accurate a description of our current world. Will COVID 19 harm Mila more than our other children. Will COVID change the way we interact. Will it change the political climiate of our
So with so much uncertainty we will live in the only truth we know to be reliable, God's Word. A truth that reminds us that God is on the throne, he loves us and that no matter what we will glorify Him in any and all situations even a daughter with Myhre Syndrome in the midst of a pandemic.
