Chiari Decompression Surgery
Well POOP. Today we met with the Neuro Surgeon to hear the results of the MRI. As a refresher we had an MRI of Mila's entire spine to check for pooling of fluid or the formation of cysts (related to Chiari Malformation), Spina bifida and tethered cord. If you would have asked Michelle and I what we thought would be the outcome we would have predicted correctly.
There is no presence of any deformity in Mila’s lower spine which we praise the Lord for. We were concerned because with Chiari there is a connection to Spina Bifida and we found a bump above Mila's bottom. This was just shown to be fatty tissue!
Tethered Cord was also a non issue, praise the Lord.
Regarding the pooling of fluid at her C1 and C2 vertebrae, there is a noticeable difference, "more prominent” from the last MRI 6 months ago. Thankfully cysts have not formed on her spine but that does not change the surgeons opinion... We need surgery, Chiari Decompression Surgery.
The first thought we had is; what if we wait? This creates too much risk. The pooling will continue to grow, cysts could form and given where the pooling exists this could create paralysis, problems swallowing, breathing and mobility concerns, etc... We could wait, but another MRI and constant monitoring of symptoms will cause us to live in an anxious "space between."
We requested that our surgeon get a consensus from his group but at the moment surgery seems to be the correct and immediate course. Like any important decisions in life we are taking time to process. We are going to pray, search Gods Word and bring in our community of faith to inform our decisions. We are asking for prayers and people to help assure us. For Gods Spirit to comfort us and if this is not in God’s Will for the option to be removed from consideration by the team of experts. This is where we need your prayers and support...
